When Baran's Keep was originally built before the Last War, orc warbands regularly raided from the Howling Peaks into Breland and the Province of Zilargo. In a deal to protect the vital House Orien trade route between Wroat and Dragonroost, the Brelish Crown built a small shell keep to be staffed by Orien Guardsmen. Named after the first commander, Baran d'Orien, Baran's Keep protected the interior of Breland and stood as an early warning outpost should mercenaries sweep out of Darguun. The Keep served ably through the Last War until House Orien refused to continue its staffing right before the Treaty of Thronehold.
Now the old Keep lies vacant but open. Caravans still take shelter in its walls and the Brelish crown occasionally sends troops to clear out any bandits that take up residence. Other than some maintenance, it remains a serviceable fortification on the southeastern boundary of Breland.
Two years ago, Kashana ir'Helmworth purchased the Keep from her old friend, King Boranel. Her original purpose for it remains unknown, but she has allowed small groups of individuals to use it as she sees fit.
