Update: We are not accepting additional vector fields for evaluation at this time. 3/1/2018

Welcome

Welcome to the Deformable Image Registration Evaluation Project. This website was established to aid users in the objective analysis of the accuracy of deformable image registration algorithms. To accomplish this goal, we have created a library of 10 virtual phantoms that visitors may download to test their own algorithms and registration processes. Each phantom consists of a start-of-treatment CT image set and an end-of-treatment CT image set representing typical start-of-treatment and end-of-treatment anatomies for patients undergoing a radiation therapy treatment course for cancers of the head and neck. The phantoms may be imported into any deformable image registration software, registration performed, and the resulting deformation vector field uploaded to this website. Upon receipt of the deformation vector field, error statistics will be computed and reported. Although the original publication stated that the ground-truth deformation vector fields and original contours would be available upon data submission, we are not able to offer these files directly. This data may be purchased by contacting Oncology Systems Limited. Please address any questions or comments to DIR.Phantoms@gmail.com.

Virtual Phantom Library

The virtual phantom library consists of a start-of-treatment CT image set and an end-of-treatment CT image set for 10 distinct phantoms representing patients with cancers of the head and neck. The phantoms are based on actual patient images acquired over a course of radiation therapy of 33-35 fractions. The start-of-treatment image sets are based on the patients' initial planning CTs and the end-of-treatment image sets are based on images acquired near the end of treatment. To obtain a pair of image sets where the underlying transformation is known, the start-of-treatment image set was iteratively deformed, using a combination of biomechanical and fiducial-based algorithms, to resemble the actual end-of-treatment image set. Following this deformation process, the iteratively-deformed start-of-treatment image set is now known as a simulated end-of-treatment image set. Noise was added to the simulated end-of-treatment image set to better resemble images acquired in actual clinical practice. This entire process is described in detail in the initial publication.

The virtual phantom library may be downloaded here.

Data Submission

Once you have downloaded the virtual phantoms and performed the deformable image registration for each phantom with your algorithm of interest, you may upload the resulting deformation vector fields (in DICOM format) to this website. The vector fields will be compared with our ground-truth transformations, error statistics will be computed, and the results will be emailed to you and posted here. The ground-truth deformation vector fields and original contours may be purchased by contacting Oncology Systems Limited.
