Repair Info:
This site should be your friends’ first stop for repair information -- http://www.pinwiki.com/wiki/
It is actively updated.
Next, the good pinball repair guides that I mentioned (ala Chilton-like) were taken off-line by Clay, the author. Those guides were the definitive work for repairing machines. Clay is also the guy with the 200 machines in Hamburg, and hosting the May show.
What Clay left on line is a small subset of his full volume of work, at his website here: http://www.pinrepair.com/
Now, this next site is a mostly a mirror of Clay’s guides, with a partial translation into their language. http://techniek.flipperwinkel.nl/
Long ago, the guys that run that site received permission from him to translate, and mirror his work. Much of the material was left in English.
And here is a sample of specific guide on their site - http://techniek.flipperwinkel.nl/ballyss/rep/index1.htm
In addition, here are two web pages that I maintain. They are just are a collection of links.

The best forum for pinball repair, is the UseNet group rec.games.pinball . You can search for issues, and posts requests for help. It works best if you start your subject heading with “TECH: “
https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!forum/rec.games.pinball
Lastly, if your friends need help, I can give them phone support on Solid State games (say 1980 and newer). If they have the older electromechanical machines, I don’t have the experience to repair those, but my friends do.
Staying connected:
If you or your friends, want to stay posted on regional pinball shows, events, and machines for sale, I maintain the Michigan Pinball League google group. It is an on-line forum, and free to join. If you or they want on the list, just send me their e-mail addresses, and I can add them.
https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!forum/michigan-pinball-league . The MPL group has a very good signal to noise ratio, with little traffic. Also, I’m the moderator, so I quickly remove anyone hinting of spamming it.
The most popular online forum for pinball enthusiast is Pinside http://pinside.com/pinball/forum/
This is a very active forum, with a poor signal-to-noise ratio. Stuff gets buried quick here, and there is a lot of pinball drama. The people here are mostly focused on the solid state, and newer machines, when they are focused.
The best forum for EM pinball, is the Yahoo Group.

Hope this helps.
