Orientation and Mentoring Plan

The New Jersey Department of Education requires that novice teachers are to go through a mentorship program. The program is designed to assist novice teachers with instructional and emotional support. The program requires that novice teachers will receive ongoing feedback and coaching to deliver instruction that translates into gains in student achievement. The district mentoring program builds teacher knowledge of effective practice and state content standards.Novice teacher training shall include:

  • Orientation on district policies and procedures
  • Training on evaluation system
  • Orientation on district’s culture, curriculum, technology systems, and assessment program
  • Training on the common core standards
  • Training on strategies related to the common core standards
  • Professional development on exemplary teaching skills and educational practices
  • Discussions on the challenges of teaching
  • Mentorship with an experienced teacher to provide support, guidance, observational feedback, and opportunities for modeling,

New teachers to the district training shall include:

  • Orientation on district policies and procedures
  • Training on evaluation system
  • Occasional mentorship with colleague, supervisor or team
