Below is a file called odd one out. These should be used as a ten minute activity in every KS3 lesson (except skills tests). They are best used as starters. Project one slide onto the board and get pupils to state which one is the odd one out and why. The importance here is to work on their justification of their answer (even if it is not always the mathematical reason it may not be wrong). Focus on the language being used. Try to get students to say "is not a multiple of" rather than "not in the ....times table". The more the students hear and use key vocabulary the better their understanding will be. Use one slide per lesson. After students have become more confident with the concept you could get them to write their thoughts on mini whiteboards and hold up, this could help focus on full sentences. Remember to ask pupils by name and not just those with their hand up (ie do not let pupils hide).
