Lesson 1
Get to know your class.
Give out books, talk about expectations etc
Do some basic numeracy activities or games;
Spiral
Who is worth more?
Ladders
Caterpillar (If number is even, half it, if number is odd, add 1 type of rules)
(or others of your choice)
Lesson 2
Maths audit.
Give class the 8 questions to do in silence on their own.
Collect in or get pupils to swap to mark.
Get class to explain their methods, allow them to make mistakes so that you get a good idea of their misconceptions if any.
(At the end of the lesson take in the papers and analyse the results, pay close attention to their methods as this will lead your lesson planning)
Feedback - asap after maths audit
Go through results of audit with the class talking about the methods used, show the group analysis you have done and the methods used in the class. You could take photocopies of parts of paper to highlight different methods seen. It is important to relate this back to topic 1 so this needs to be done asap for each class.
This may not take a whole lesson but could if you need it too. You could look at putting some initial goals on their marginal gains wheel or do some reflect and correct here.
