Week 1 - Images of Africa

This was the first of the four lessons we ran at City Academy Norwich before the students had met their pen pals in Niger. We looked at preconceived ideas about Africa and how Africa is presented in the media. Generally, presentation is quite negative, and the students' comments focused on problems they perceived to be widespread on the African continent: poverty, lack of clean water, lack of shoes, heat.

To start countering these negative ideas we asked them to create and present a tourist board advertisement for a country in Africa, which we filmed.

We also asked them what they thought the students from Zinder would be like.

This session was assessed using Geography learning outcomes taken from a Geography APP grid.
