Upcoming Events and Important Changes

Post date: Jun 29, 2019 1:14:28 PM

We have several upcoming events that should be of interest to club members, as well as some events for non-club members that we would love for you to pass the word about. Please read this entire message when you have the time.

Attached is information for our annual 3x3 tournament held at Breakaway Days. The rules and format will be the same as last year and again is open to children from other communities and non-club members. Any and all children going into kindergarten through 12th grade are welcome, just line up a couple of teammates and have fun! The proceeds will go to maintaining equipment and payment on our fields complex.

We are also going to be working on some small fundraising events in our continuing effort to raise money to pay for our new field complex. Amanda Gesme has volunteered to organize a few events, two of which are up and running. If you want information, or are able to help out, please contact her at amandagesme@yahoo.com.

The two events currently running include a table at the weekly farmer's market on Thursdays. If you have produce, baked goods, or other appropriate items you would be willing to donate, please let her know. We would also love it if you could volunteer a night or two to attend the market to sell items. Again, contact Amanda to schedule a time. The second endeavor that she has initiated involves the Stuff Etc store in Waterloo. She has registered the soccer club as a consignor there and if you have any old items you no longer use that you would like to donate or consign, you can take them to Stuff under our account. The club would then get a percentage or the proceeds. If you have questions, contact Amanda. Thank you Amanda for setting these things up for the good of the club!

Last, we will be having our annual club meeting on Sunday, July 21 at 5:30 at the community room at the library. Please come to find out what is new with the club, where we are going, and to have your input. Very importantly, we will have at least two openings for board positions, fields director and registrar. These are important positions that we need filled if we are going to be able to continue to function as a club and provide opportunities to our kids. We are all busy, but every one of you will have the time to be able to help out in these positions. Gabe Shepard has been doing double duty as fields director and vice president for the last year, as well as coaching and mowing. We desperately need some more help to take the load off of Gabe and others on the board. Please contact me if you have questions, or show up on the 21st. We will give you as much support as we can.

We can provide more specific details about the duties of each position, but the basics include the following. The fields director would be responsible for organizing field set up and tear down in the fall and spring, make sure supplies are on hand, primarily paint, ensure that the fields are painted for weekend games if coaches or parents have not already done so (in recent years painting of fields has been divided up between several people), purchasing necessary items as needed, and generally work in conjunction with the president on decisions regarding updating equipment and game cancellations.

The registrar is an important position that includes a lot of organization skills and familiarity with computers. Bethany Harberts has been in this position for many years and can assist in helping you get up to speed with the Iowa Soccer League technology and registration technology. This position does a lot, but primarily is responsible for implementing the registration for players/coaches in the fall and spring seasons, arranging the teams, facilitating uniform orders and distribution to coaches, communication with club members via e-mails, and working with the ISL to implement league directives. The registrar also works in conjunction with the president in a lot of club decisions and in working with the ISL on any matters that come up.

Neither of these positions particularly requires any knowledge about soccer, or frankly even having children in the club. I do not currently have children in the club either. All that is required is some time, a desire to help others and our community, and being organized and dedicated to completing the tasks necessary in a timely manner. Please also feel free to reach out directly to Gabe and/or Bethany if you want ot get insight into the jobs and more detail. This is a turning point for the club and in order to continue to function, we need your help. Thank you for considering these opportunities.

One more thing, thank you to all who have contributed financially to our new soccer complex. The project is moving ahead and the fields have been laid down and seeded. Hopefully, games will be held within the next year. While we have received generous support, we are still far short of actually paying for the work that has already been done and that remains left. If you have not already done so, please consider a tax deductible donation to the soccer club. You can send a check to P.O. Box 22, Denver, IA 50622 or we have a paypal link on the website. Thank you for anything you can give.
