Welcome to my homepage!

I am a Professor of Physics. After my retirement from the post of Professor (HAG scale) at IIT Kanpur, I joined the Department of Physics at DIT University, a private university in Dehradun (my Home Town) in July 2023 . At present I am also the Dean of Research and Consultancy at DIT University. During my three decades of service as a Faculty member at IIT Kanpur, I have served as the Head of the Department of Physics and also held two terms as an endowed chair professor at IIT Kanpur from 2011 to 2018. I have been a recipient of the prestigious J.C. Bose National Fellowship (2013-2023) awarded by the Science and Engineering Research Board of the Government of India. I have had the honor of getting elected as a fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (Delhi), Indian Academy of Sciences (Bangalore), and National Academy of Sciences India (Allahabad). I am also a recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Award of IIT Kanpur (2020). Over the last four decades I have carried out research on many interdisciplinary topics where I have applied the concepts and techniques of statistical physics that are appropriate for studying Disordered Systems and Random Dynamical Processes; these research areas are at the interface of Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and Engineering. I had the privilege of serving as the Ph.D. thesis supervisor of ten students; some of them are now professors in premier academic institutions in India. I teach courses both at the undergraduate (BS/M.Sc.) and postgraduate levels (Ph.D.).

For more than three decades my wife, Indrani, and I have lived in the campus of IIT Kanpur, a green residential campus in the Gangetic plains. Now we live in our house in Dehradun, the capital of the Indian state of Uttarakhand (translated: "Northern Land"), known for its picturesque landscapes and cool weather. The nearby beautiful campus of DIT University, where my new office is located, is surrounded by wooded green hills of the Doon valley at the foothills of the Himalayas. This city and the surrounding areas are also gateways to many tourist destinations in Garhwal and pilgrimage to some of the holiest shrines of Hinduism. Our son, Debanjan, was awarded M.Sc. (5-year Integrated) degree from IIT Kanpur and Ph.D. degree from Harvard University (Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA). Then, after completing a three-year term as a Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he joined Cornell University (USA) in January 2020 as an Assistant Professor. He now lives in Ithaca, New York (USA).
