Robert, Mary and family emigrated from Cabinheough, County Tyrone, Ireland in 1764. They settled in Chester County, South Carolina.
Robert was to old to fight in the American Revolution, so he took to the South Carolina swamps for most of eight years to escape the Tories.
Robert died in 1783 in Chester County. He was about 63 years old. Mary died in Chester County in 1790. It is unknown where they are buried.

Robert enlisted to serve in the Revolutionary War at the age of 16. He was a Private in the South Carolina militia serving under Brigadier General Francis Marion "The Swamp Fox". He fought in the Battles of Eutaw Springs and Kings Mountain.

The Battle of Kings Mountain was fought on October 7, 1780. The decisive victory by the Patriots is viewed as a turning point in the war. The Battle of Eutaw Springs was fought on September 8, 1781.
Robert married Margaret Fleming around 1785. Margaret was born in 1764 in South Carolina to George and Sidneh (Rosine) Fleming. Robert and Margaret's children:

Robert and Margaret moved to Robinson County, Tennessee in the fall of 1805. In 1818 they moved to Madison County, Illinois. The move from Tennessee was on account of the family's anti-slavery principles. These principle were re-inforced by his grandsons, at least four of whom volunteered with the Union Army during the Civil War.
Robert Stuart Coulter died on September 20, 1821 in Highland, Illinois at the age of 61. Mary died in 1825 in Highland. She was about 61. Robert and Mary are buried in Grantfork UCC Cemetery, Grantfork, Illinois.
Robert's brother, James Coulter, is the man who raised James Dougherty.
Robert Stuart Coulter, Jr. was born September 20, 1809 in Robertson, Tennessee. Robert married Isabelle Wylie in 1829. Isabelle was born April 26, 1810 in Bourbon County, Kentucky the daughter of John and Sarah (Leiper) Wylie.

Four of the Coulter boys fought in the Civil War. John was a medic with the 60th Illinois Infantry, Company H. James and Robert privates with the 22nd Illinois Infantry, Company I. Samuel was a Captain in the 111th Illinois Infantry, Company B, the same unit as Martha's second husband, James Dougherty. Martha's first husband, Corporal William McMillen aka McMillan, served in the 10th Missouri Infantry, Company F. William McMillen died of pneumonia during the war.
Isabelle was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church.
Robert Stuart Coulter, Jr. died May 14, 1852 in Washington County, Illinois. He was 42. Isabelle died January 10, 1890 in Perry County, Illinois at the age of 79. Robert and Isabelle are buried in Old Salem Pioneer Cemetery, Lively Grove, Illinois.
