Family history tells us that Bubba Noble was originally Rachel Shotness. Uncle Lou told us that her name was actually Elcha-Rasa, and that the name Shotness, originally Shachness, was an adopted name. The family name was something like Gantmacher.
In 2018 Doodie Taylor wrote "You are quite right they did come from the Ukraine, I remember being told the area was called Bessarabia - Comnitz Padolk. The spelling may not be correct. By the way Schotness was not the real name. David Schotness came over on a false Passport which was of Polish origin. The name was either Guntermucher or Goldmier. As I understand the reason for the false Passport was that he was wanted by the local authorities for his left wing views."
I tried to find out more about the Jewish Cabinet Makers Union and whichever avenue took I drew a blank.
I still assumed that the change of name was because they had to travel on a ‘bought’ passport that was in the name of Shachness. Unlike Leah, Beckie and Jessie, the two older children, Ray (Bubba) and Levy were born abroad.
For a long time I’d been trying to find Gantmacher genealogical records for Rachel, or Elka- Rasa, or for David or Martha (our great grandparents). No luck. So for some reason I thought I’d check out Shachness. My luck was in. I found Buba’s birth record – not as Gantmacher but as Shachness.
The JewishGen record was:
This was taken from the following Bessarabian birth certificate:
The close up entry below says: in Hebrew ‘Yalda (girl) Elka-Resa: Aviha (her father) David Shachness: Ema (her mother) Motlia bat Leib Yitshak.’ I can’t make out the line after David Shachness, but the transcriber has listed ‘David’ as the grandfather (with ‘Duvid’ as the father). The left hand side is the Russian version which I haven’t yet managed to translate. Presumably this is where the comment: ‘Father from Romania’ is noted.
So what does this tell us?
Bubba was born a Shachness. The name-change from Gantmacher came well before the family left for Britain, and if linked to a ‘bought’ passport could well be an internal (Russian Empire) passport or travel document if they had recently moved to Kishinev where apparently Bubba was born. (Many Jews moved to Kishinev then, at that time relatively favorable for the Jews – this was before the 1903 pogrom).
The family originally came from Romania. Borders were different then – later Kishinev was also in Romania for a while. Uncle Lou told us that the family came from a small town near Odessa. Cousin Doodie mentioned that the family had come over from Romania or Ukraine (again variable borders). The 1911 census mentioned that they came from Tulchin. This is 170 miles from Odessa, and was also once in Romania. So Lou and Doodie were both right. (Tulchin is 113 miles from Kishinev).
We can possibly go back another generation. David-Lazar’s father is listed as David. Not sure if that was possible – it’s unusual to name someone after a living relative. Marta-Dvora (Motlya’s) father was Leib-Yitshak, sadly no family name is given.
Bubba’s birthday was 13th August, 1884.
There’s still a lot more to discover!
This gives us the following selective family tree for the Shotness-Nobles:
