What can invasion games and team sports coaches take from coaching in skiing individual sports?
The speed, space, obstacles, hazards and terrain are not constant, you need to scan, interpret, align and adapt to the changing environment in front of you as it unfolds in real time.
Give (constructive) feedback given after every attempt / run.
Dave Ryding Britain’s top racer, spent a summer training indoors concentrating on the turn of his less skilful foot to prevent it holding him back.
Individuals learn even basic movements, balancing and stance at different rates. Allow for it.
Errors are not necessarily down to technique, but are highly affected by fear and confidence.
Catastrophe theory - performance doesn’t just decline with anxiety in inverted U fashion - it can complete drop if the challenge is too extreme or causes a crash - and confidence will only be rebuilt slowly.
Copying drills / circus tricks may show quick gains in the task but do they really transfer to overall performance.
Female to male ACL injury rates in elite skiers are close (5%) unlike in teenagers in most cutting sports females 4-6 times more likely; possibly due to the focussed work on alignment, coordination & strength.
Great to be invited to do a podcast on Coaching and Coach Education for the Magic Academy, from here in Niseko.

September - Finally, finished and published the `Fixing your Low Back` eBook. If your low back keeps being irritated it's likely a lack of stability & balanced strength (not lack of flexibility). One of the most effective ways to develop stability is the reverse-plank; developing isometric strength-endurance in your low back, glutes & hamstrings. Stop it recurring.

`Injury Prevention & Longevity in Snowsports`,
with particular reference to knee & low-back issues.
BASI SSS, SSE and SSW endorsed CPD workshop.
This full workshop design is practical, but off-snow, and has been aimed at mainly level 3 & 4 teachers or coaches (more experienced and older coaches, those who deal with children, or with older clients would find it particularly interesting) but is available to all.
The content is underpinned by evidence and research and then evolved with practice over the past 5 years. Following initial presentations and discussions at Interski, two International Congresses of Science in Skiing, and then workshops held in France and with the ESI, it aims to inform and to reduce knee and back problems in recreational snowsports enthusiasts, racers and instructors. That ongoing review has included the publishing of the practical guides based on hard evidence `Ski Conditioning for Injury Prevention...` (2014), `...Bulletproof Knees` (2015) and the newest book on 'Fixing your Back Ache...' 2017).
The workshop will,
A) Review extent of the problems in the sport (for both instructors and their clients) the factors involved injury risk, the evidence for injury reduction and the latest advice for managing, preserving and continued use of strong knees and low backs in the sport, including contraindications of common specific exercise routines.
B) Give the opportunity for personal testing and understanding the functional tests of asymmetry and weaknesses that can predisposes people to long term problems.
C) Offer practical guides and personal advice to reduce injury, for the candidates, for their fellow instructors and their clients, including young racers.

England Football underperform again in a tournament. Euro2016 - The home nations (with the exception of Scotland!) all did well getting through to the knock-out stages (helped it should be said by the expansion of the tournament so that more teams progressed) and Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland, went on to put in top performances to be proud of. England however underperformed, with the team, `stars` and manager putting in dreadful, broken performances from their last half match of the tournament. Stress response - freezing not thriving! The brittle legacy and lack of confidence will be harder to turn around than the recent world class improvements in the competitiveness of England Rugby Union and Cricket, especially as the competition is bigger.
Nice to have been able to and asked to help 6 more skiers with their injury, fitness and balance problems.

Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NUST) have proposed that `fitness age` is a better indicator of longevity than chronological age. I took their test and came out with the fitness of an average under 20yr old (even less than their lowest estimate of 35 for my chronological age) ... !

National Taiwan Sports University - great venue for an athletics training camp (Taoyuan, Taiwan).
Manchester United - Their `pre-season` success and tactics, against top opposition, were not just because it was a `friendly` tournament. However, now the season has started, there has been a continuation to the story of too many injuries to 1st team essentials, too many squad-level `only` wide players & impact forwards, and not enough speed & strength in central defence / midfield. Lacking power & star quality in central midfield, and without a settled spine through the team; United, without starting Van Persie, Rooney, Mata, De Gea & Jones fully fit cannot make up for the weaknesses. Other teams know it and the players are losing confidence again especially at Old Trafford. The new team need to become hard to beat (with new defence signings getting in the team quickly). I predict a 4th place Premiership finish.
11 months ago a complicated, competition knee-injury meant I couldn't walk downstairs. Other issues followed, 8 months ago I still couldn't walk in a ski boot. Following my own carefully designed programme of rehab, exercise and then sports reconditioning; I have lost the 8kg excess weight I put on, regained two thirds of the fitness I lost, despite the pelvic and spinal twist, can now run for over 80 minutes, can run up and down steep hills (and ski hard).
Work in progress...
William Sichel becomes the oldest person to complete the World's Longest Certified Footrace – The Sri Chinmoy Self Transcendence 3100 Mile Race in New York last week, in a time of 50 Days 15 hours 06 minutes and 04 seconds. In doing this William set 58 records, including 20 National records.

“The idea that we would give these game-changers to our athletes right before the Olympics and they get to the line and feel like they had an advantage, that did not work"- Late introduction of new race suits, the squad's high-altitude training program, and a lack of data collection at the root of the team's historic poor showing at the Sochi Olympics...
