Darval's commitment to the problems of affordable yet high quality housing led him to invent, develop and manufacture the Unison building system: Australian Patent 68501/65 431593 attached below.
There were two production lines: Panel and Module. The Panel line produced all components for wall floor and roofing panels; mass production of standard panels and components enabled buildings of any configuration. The Module line produced completed building modules which were shipped and placed together on site; they were produced to order.
Based in Brisbane, Unison Australia won contracts for the design, manufacture, delivery, installation and commissioning of housing and buildings for a wide range of other purposes, across every climatic zone of Australia, and also the south pacific and Saudi Arabia.
In 1971 the capacity of the Unison factory, as measured by turnover, was in the order of $3,000,000 annually or about $27,000,000 at 2012 dollar values.
The following pages illustrate the application of Unison to housing, education, administration, and other community functions.
