It is a global organisation represented in 166 states. The UNDP works to connect countries with knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. The focus is to help countries build and share solutions to the challenges of :Democratic governance,
- Poverty Reduction,
- Crisis Prevention and recovery,
- Environment and energy and
- HIV/AIDS
The UNDP is a central player in regards to development in Afghanistan and works to achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Despite extreme poverty, ill health, and hunger, Afghans define the lack of security as their greatest problem. The government of Afghanistan has added a new goal "ENHANCE SECURITY" to the eight MDGs recognizing the critical role of peace and security. Hence, security is a top priority for the UNDP in Afghanistan.
