Been a while since my last visit on the forums and wanted to post my latest work in case someone's considering the Harley Dyna seat mod on a Deluxe model. I've only seen the mod on the Custom models so far. Now I'm really glad that I did. The Deluxe model tank doesn't allow the Dyna seat to be installed as far forward as the Custom models and I wanted to let anyone know before hand what they might have to alter to make a good fit. Much more comfortable now and about 2 inches lower for my short stumps and the riding position would be comfortable for longer legs as well. I removed the original seat mount (bracket) on the frame for the stock seat, smoothed out the welds sanded and painted, then fab'd a cheap cross bar out of 1/8th inch flat bar that mounts about 3" further back and approx. 1 1/2" lower on the frame so the Dyna seat actually sits much better and no need to whack off the CDI and other electrical holders on the inner fender which is from a '79 Custom model. The Deluxe model fuel tank pushes the Dyna seat further rearward than the Custom's so I had to compensate and the seat position for me is very comfortable now and identical to the original stock seat position. I decided to go with a rear fender from an '81 CB900 Custom, about 2" longer than the CX500 Custom's and 6 1/2" wide, with a couple of light mods (brackets/spacers) to install and a '79 Custom tail light (mounting holes match perfectly on the CB900 fender) Just need to mount up some turn sigs and a few other minor details. Been too cold for these OLD hands lately so it's taken a while longer than anticipated. As always Ride Safe -:)
Didn't really have to do too much just extended the bracket from the original seat forward with that piece of flat chrome bar and it slides perfectly under the frame much the same as the original seat did. Didn't have to touch the Dyna's bracket at all just drilled a hole in the center of it. I was happy with the way it fit and didn't shave anything off the seat pan. I copied the drilled fender mod from someone here on the forum using some old chrome tube from a luggage rack. The gap is pretty much minimal but it's not perfect. I plan on saddlebags anyway to haul the groceries -:)
