Please keep the following in mind while preparing the list of Ph.D. thesis examiners and viva-voce examiners.
(For those registered after 28 November 2016, only a PhD thesis examiners' list is required)
Ph.D. thesis examiners:
Six names are needed, with designation, address, and e-mail. The examiners should all be full professors (or equivalent).
They should all be from outside the state, and 2-3 from outside India. None of them can be a collaborator of the candidate.
Viva-voce examiners:
We need three names, and they should all be full professors (or equivalent) and preferably be from within Kolkata or nearby region. No names from the same institution are permitted.
[Important note: For candidates registered under the new regulation (2016), one of the thesis examiners must be present during the final viva-voce and act as the external examiner, so no separate viva-voce panel is needed for such candidates. The University will bear the reimbursement cost only for the CU candidates. For candidates from sister institutes and affiliated colleges, the respective institutions have to bear the cost. All candidates enrolled (not registered) on or after 28/11/2016 fall under the purview of the new regulation.]
The thesis/viva examiners' list should not be signed by the advisor. Both hard copy and soft copy are acceptable.
*** Please note that inclusion of anyone in either of the lists who is not a full professor (or equivalent) may cause unnecessary delay, a possible rejection of the panel at the authority level, and a resubmission of the list. Such a restriction is, unfortunately, beyond our control. ***
Early submission requests:
A candidate can apply for early submission of the thesis, which reduces the compulsory gap between submission of the 5000 word summary and the thesis to 3 months from the stipulated 6 months. The letter must be addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, University of Calcutta, through the Convenor, Ph.D. Research Advisory Committee in Physics (Theoretical). Please note:
1) The application for such permission is to be recommended if the candidate has any position (including postdoc) abroad;
2) It will also be recommended if (s)he has a position in India which requires submission of thesis before joining.
[Proof will be needed for both these cases]
3) In no other cases the request will be entertained, and in particular never for the reason that the candidate will run out of fellowship.
4) On very exceptional circumstances the Ph.D RAC can have a different decision.
These rules will come into effect immediately after the PhD RAC meeting to be held on September 13, 2017.
Change of thesis title
Such requests can be submitted at any time after the registration is complete. The candidate has to apply to the Vice-Chancellor, University of Calcutta, through the Convenor, Ph.D. Research Advisory Committee in Physics (Theoretical). It should contain the old (approved) title, the new proposed title, and a recommendation of the advisor. A copy of the registration letter issued by the university showing the old title must also be attached.
Important note for advisors: It is not the responsibility of the PhD RAC to remind the advisors to submit the thesis and viva-voce examiners' list on time. The former should be submitted before the candidate submits the thesis. The latter should be submitted within 2-3 months of thesis submission. The responsibility lies solely with the advisor.
