Average lifespan in the wild - 15 - 20 years
Size - Head and Body is 22-36 inches
Tail - 23 to 36 inches
Weight - 15-22 pounds
Coloration- Male Howler Monkeys are black in color, while the females are brown. The brownish color allows the females to camouflage themselves from predators. Also, they can be red, which is the most common.
Distinctive features - They have tails that are longer than their own body
Unique characteristics - they are very very loud and can sound like they are out your door from a mile away. Howler Monkeys stay the same shape and color all throughout their lifespan. Except for males. All Howler Monkeys are born goldish brown but when males get to the age of sexual maturity they will turn black.
Habitat- Ranges from southern Mexico to Northern Argentina. It can be found in Central and South America. They live in the forests usually never leaving the tree tops except if they need extra water.
Niche- The Howler Monkey is a secondary consumer due to its consumption of leaves and other foods.
Food Sources-Howlers eat mainly top canopy leaves, together with fruit,buds, flowers, and nuts. They need to be careful not to eat too many leaves of certain species in one sitting, as some contain toxins that can poison them. Howler monkeys are also known to occasionally raid birds' nests and chicken coops and consume the eggs.
Status- Some species of howler monkey may be critically endangered over sections of their ranges. But for the most part, there is no concern with the extinction of howler monkeys.
Cultural Significance - Howler Monkey Gods of the ancient Maya played a big role in their society and in their music and arts and also as patron of the artisans, especially of the scribes and sculptors. As such, his sphere of influence overlapped with that of the Tonsured Maize God. The monkey patrons - there are often two of them - have been depicted on Classic vases in the act of writing books and carving human heads.

On one of the busiest highways in Brazil was stopped completely due to an escaped Howler Monkey. A police police officer was called to action to rescue this howler monkey but the tides turned quickly. This funny playtime was a hilarious topic on the next day's morning news. The Monkey was finally caught after a lot of “Monkeying around!” Here’s a video!
