Practicum Instructors will complete a student evaluation at the end of fall and spring semesters. Students will also complete a self-evaluation at the end of fall and spring semesters. Evaluations are completed via the CalState S4 system.
The evaluations address the nine student competency areas and have practice behaviors assigned to each competency.
Please keep in mind that students will not receive credit for the practicum if the evaluations are not completed.
If areas are marked "NA" (not applicable) in the fall semester we would ask that you look at what learning activities you could add in the spring semester that would allow you to evaluate the student on those practice behaviors.
Evaluation/feedback should be on-going, regular, and provide consistent feedback to the student about strengths and areas for growth. Feedback should not only come at the end of each semester but weekly, and daily, when appropriate.
Evaluation requires active participation of the student, who learns how to self-evaluate as a result. Our hope is that supervisors will ask students on an on-going basis to evaluate themselves.
Evaluation provides an opportunity for re-contracting and setting new learning objectives as needed. When feedback is occurring on a regular basis it provides an opportunity to talk about new areas for growth and to consider new learning tasks that may help develop these areas.
Students may benefit from being encouraged to think critically about their practice and evaluate what they might do different the next time.
What does feedback look like?
Clear guidelines for performance
Uses direct observations as well as student's self-report
Timely feedback - immediately following the action
Regular feedback - given after every direct observation
Balanced feedback - both positive and negative comments are given
Concise and direct feedback - clear and easy to understand with specific and concrete suggestions for change
Follow-up on how the student is using the feedback
