Please remember this is an active fire station.
Do not block the driveways and do not park in front of any doors.
Good sportsmanship is expected at all times by everyone present at the race.
The following are the official rule and should help you plan accordingly.
Cars must be made from the official kit provided by Pack 270 including the wood block, wheels, and axles.
The car must have been made in the current scouting year by the Scout alongside a parent or guardian using proper judgment with regards to safety. The car should not be built by a family member, friend, or 3rd party.
Each car must be registered and pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it will be allowed to compete.
a. Dimensions:
i. Maximum width over wheels: 2-3/4 inches
ii. Minimum width between wheels: 1-3/4 inches
iii. Maximum length: 7 inches
iv. Minimum ground clearance: 3/8 inch
b. Weight
i. Cars shall not exceed a weight of 5 ounces as measured by the official Pack 270 scale(s).
Any car that exceeds the weight limit or does not comply with any other specification may be modified for compliance if such modification can be completed during the registration period.
Loose material or material held in place by tape or stickers is not allowed. All material including weights must be securely attached.
Wheel bearings, washers, or bushings are not allowed.
Wheels may not be modified in any way including sanding or removal of imperfections.
a. Axles may not be polished
b. Wheels may not be polished
c. All 4 wheels must be touching the track at check-in. This will be validated by a roll test in a template at check-in.
Only dry graphite lubricant is allowed. No material may be added to the wheels other than approved dry graphite shavings (available at hobby stores).
The car may not ride on any type of suspension.
Body design and styling details are left to the discretion of the builder provided the car meets all other specifications.
The car must be freewheeling and not include any source of propulsion.
Should a car not comply with the rules and the owner is unable to correct the discrepancy, the car will be disqualified and not allowed to race.
If a car passes inspection, it will be placed on a table in the pit area and may not be touched by its owner or anyone other than official members of the race committee, track workers, or inspection committee. No further adjustments or lubrication will be permitted.
Cars must be checked in/registered and pass inspection by the check-in date. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Heats will be held for each Cub Scout Rank.
The competition for each Rank will consist of a point-based elimination phase. Each car will have the opportunity to race in each lane of the track. The number of points collected by a car in a heat corresponds to the sequence (first through sixth place) in which the car crosses the finish line.
Once all the heats have been completed for a Rank, the car with the lowest total points is the winner of that Rank and advances to the Grand Finals.
The starter will place the cars on the track and will then start the race.
If a car leaves the track, runs out of its lane, or is otherwise unable to reach the finish line on its own, the car will be “helped” across the finish line in order to complete the race. Only if a car interferes with another car will the heat be rerun. If the same car gets into trouble on the rerun, that car will be disqualified and considered in need of emergency repair.
If a car requires emergency repair, such repair may be attempted by a member of the 2026 Pinewood Derby Race Committee or the car registrant depending on attendance. 5 minutes maximum for repairs.
During the Grand Finals round, the top finisher from each Rank will compete against each other. The heats will operate in the same manner as Eliminations (each car races in each lane, points correspond to finish sequence). Once all the heats have been completed for the Grand Finals the Pack winner will be the car with the lowest points of the Grand Finals heats.
Tiebreaker Rules
a. In the event of a points tie to determine a Rank or Grand Finals winner, the racing software will attempt to break the tie based on the car’s performance data of past races by average speed. If the tie is not broken, then an elimination heat will be run to determine a winner.
Scouts and adults shall remain mindful of the Scout Laws. Unsportsman- like conduct will be grounds for disqualification from the competition.
Any scout or adult may appeal to the Race Committee for an interpretation of these rules. The Race Committee will be the final judge of these rules. Pack Committee Chair will break any tie votes.
Any protest of a car's compliance with the rules must be filed with the Race Committee prior to the start of competition.
