IGEL Summer Institute and Conference, Montréal 7-10 July

I am invited faculty at the Summer Institute of the Society for the Empirical Study of Literature and the Media, organized by Don Kuiken. The SI includes over 30 researchers at different career stages. Along with David Miall and Ellen Esrock I will be a facilitator of the section Cognitive Psychology and Literature: Imagery, Emotion, and Embodiment.

I will also be chairing the panel on Literary Language, and giving the talk Conceptual Templates for Emotion in Poetic Imagery. Here is the abstract:

I present an inventory of conceptual templates across poetic imagery of emotions from different languages and periods. The inventory provides an alternative to surveys of emotion metaphors within Lakoff & Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory, by studying these cognitive patterns of emotion using Fauconnier & Turner’s Conceptual Integration Theory, combined with spatial schemas and cultural frames. This allows for the description of complex patterns and emergent structures across seemingly unrelated examples, as well as for the formulation of testable hypotheses related to literary reading, especially regarding the integration of developmentally early spatial schemas with affective meaning.
