I have been working in the Peruvian Altiplano since 2007. The region is home to speakers of three main languages; Quechua, Aymara, and Spanish, and communities with a range of subsistence activities from fishing, agriculture, pastoralism, trading, and mining. Learn more about the linguistic border region here and about our ongoing project about the adoption of a new pilgrimage here.
To understand regional dynamics at the language boundary I have been working with Prof. Julio Adalberto Tumi Quispe and students from the Universidad Nacional del Altiplano. The team has investigated Aymara-Quechua relationships, as well as regional adoption of pilgrimage to a new ritual site at the border. See preliminary results at the project website.
