About 22 August, 2017 we were contacted by Darley Newman of “Travels with Darley” to inquire if my husband, Dr Al Grauer and I would be interested in being part of a project at the Cosmic Campground. We agreed and Newman and her camera crew met us there about 6:30 p.m. September 3, 2017. Darley interviewed/directed us and the camera crew made videos, stills, and aerial views with drones. In the evening Dr. Grauer was showing us objects with our telescope. When they saw the moon a photographer tried his hand at taking photos of the moon through our telescope. Four hours with them went by quickly.
Newman spoke on Capital Hill the 3rd week of February for the 50th anniversary event for the National Trail System and talked about us and the Cosmic Campground and showed them photographs of us and the video from their visit.
The Cosmic Campground is located off US Hwy180 between mile markers 37 and 38 about 8.5 miles north of Alma, NM. There is a brown National Forest sign opposite the entrance at an orange cattle guard. The hard surface road is 1.3 miles to the campground. There is a two place standard FS toilet on site. Go to cosmiccampground.org for information regarding gas, lodging, restaurants, and supplies.
Cosmic Campground is partnered with the Gila National Forest. We have a 20 year special use permit with the Gila National Forest to place a high tech weather station and night sky data collection system run by solar power at the campground. Data will be streamed over the internet wirelessly for people, especially students, around the globe.
Dr Grauer and I traveled to Scotland for the European Dark Sky Conference September 19-21 where Dr. Grauer presented the keynote talk on the Cosmic Campground to astronomers and others interested in the natural night sky. I was asked to present a poster. I used a 16”x 20” photo of the Milky Way rising over the Gila Wilderness with the Gila National Forest sign taken by Steven Miller, an astrophotographer visiting for a week in late April from Florida. Many people were adding a visit to the campground to their bucket lists after seeing the poster and hearing the talk.
Aldo Leopold students and staff will be visiting Cosmic Campground in April for an overnight. An Aldo Leopold student helped take data when we were working to get the International Dark Sky Association (IDA) designation as a Dark Sky Sanctuary in 2015. Cosmic Campground was designated by unanimous vote by the board of the IDA as the only Dark Sky Sanctuary in the northern hemisphere January 2016.
The Friends of the Cosmic Campground continue to pursue funding to install a shelter to allow visitors a retreat from the sun. A weather station to collect data to be streamed over the internet wirelessly for people, especially students, around the globe is, also, in the plans.

Before teaming up to shoot at night, the two had not realized how big of a problem light pollution was. They decided to use their narrative filmmaking and storytelling skills to raise awareness, teaming up with the International Dark Sky Association, and using data from amateur astronomers and light pollution metrics from the National Park Service. The pair also released a book with all the dark sky locations they visited.

“We found that in a lot of the towns and spaces we went to, the night sky is becoming a tourist attraction itself as it becomes more and more rare to see the Milky Way and these sights from the city,” Mehmedinovic told Travel + Leisure.
For those in search of galactic views, here are 13 destinations to add to your list.
Timelapse filmmakers Harun Mehmedinovic and Gavin Heffernan have spent three years traveling to more than 500 locations to capture the magnificence of the last truly dark skies.
