It is important that lessons are planned and delivered so that children can make connections between different related areas of mathematics, applying what they know about one aspect to different topics. To begin with they will often need prompting through the teacher 'Drawing attention to…' However, children must be given opportunities to develop their reasoning skills. This does not happen by constantly repeating learnt procedures whilst working daily from a textbook.

The following exercise provides an equal amount of practice to answering 10 column additions from a text book, whilst developing reasoning, thus leading to a deeper understanding.
