Generality

Generalising is the process of seeing through the particular by not dwelling on the particularities but rather stressing the relationships.

Generalising is moving from specific examples to speculating and expressing wider patterns in mathematics.

Relationships and structures in mathematics can be generalised and thus connected. In particular this is what algebra does, which makes it a powerful problem solving tool. Although formal algebra is not taught within the primary curriculum until it is introduced at Level 5, the development of algebraic thinking is central to sustained progression and success in the subject.

This begins with expressing generalities first in words then in formula.

Odd= even - 1

Odd= even + odd

Even = odd + odd

O = E - 1

O = E + O

E = O + O
