Syria

Time to seriously intervene in Syria

Hello there

I am hoping that the missile attack on the Assad regime's airfield is the beginning of increased US intervention in Syria. Firstly this is critical for the destruction of Daesh (ISIS) in the east of the country while Assad and his foreign backers finish off Al Qaeda forces in the northwest. Secondly, the US military is needed on the ground to supervise the process of bringing the Civil War to a close.

With the end of the civil war we will see some positive outcomes. We will see the demise of the Assad regime, the destruction of Daesh and Al Qaeda as military forces and the elimination of Iranian influence in the country.

After the war the US and other rich countries will need to assist the new government with considerable reconstruction assistance so that the people of Syria have a future.

As a communist, it is very easy for me to take this position. I am committed to a common global future. Among other things this means supporting the western democracies when they assist the less developed countries to shake off really bad governments. Indeed it can mean calling upon them to do so when they fail to.

This progressive view has its many opponents.

Firstly we have that scoundrel Barak Obama who pulled out of Iraq and then failed to intervene at the beginning of Syrian Civil War when he could have nipped Daesh in the bud and forced Assad's early departure.

Then you have the right-wing anti-globalist xenophobes who want Assad to stay in power so he can keep all those Muslims under control.

The most loathsome opponents are the pseudo or phony left that support Assad on the grounds that he is resisting US imperialism.

I would like to finish by giving praise where praise is due. I have in mind Senator John McCain who stands out for his implacable support for regime change and nation building in the Middle East North Africa region.

See you next time.
