Lionel got his PhD under Dr. Sidney McDaniel at Mississippi State University working on the ecology of the Black Needlerush, Juncus roemerianus, in 1974.
He worked on many different aspects of botany in a variety of coastal habitats along the Mississippi Sound. A sampling of his research is highlighted in the Marine Briefs publications below.

After retiring from the Gulf Coast Research Lab, Dr. Eleuterius operated Wetlands Inc., an environmental consulting business. Lionel passed away in 2011 at the age of 75.
