Career Synopsis
In eight seasons as the head varsity football coach at Deuel High School my teams amassed a 37-37 (.500) record and qualified for the playoffs seven seasons in a row. Both of those marks are school records. To put things in perspective during the twelve seasons prior to my arrival the team had a record of 23-76 (.232), zero winning seasons, and made the playoffs only three times (0 wins). In my final six seasons we had a 33-24 (.579) record, four winning seasons, and made the playoffs all six years (3 wins). That is the best six year stretch in school history. The 9-win season (9-2) in 2014 tied for the most wins in school history. Back to back winning records the final two seasons (2016 and 2017) marked the first time that had been done in over thirty years (1984-1985). In addition I had tremendous success fundraising, improving overall strength and conditioning, and injecting excitement into a program that had been lacking it for some time. Prior to my arrival at Deuel I spent two years as an assistant coach at South Broward High School in Hollywood, FL under the direction of Hall of Fame coach Allen Held, including a 10-2 season in which our only losses came to national powerhouse St Thomas Aquinas.
I have experience as a head coach, offensive coordinator, and defensive coordinator; as well as having coached offensive line, defensive line, linebackers, running backs, wide receivers, and quarterbacks.
2017 Season
The Cardinals finished the season 5-4 after losing in the first found of the playoffs to Bon Homme. All four losses came to playoff teams with a combined record of 32-8. Britton-Hecla who finished second in the ECC went on to win the 9A Championship. The Cardinals would finish 4th in the ECC behind Hamlin, Britton-Hecla, and Webster. Six sophomores and two freshmen registered starts for the Cardinals. Deuel qualified for the playoffs for a school record 7th season in a row and Coach Rosdahl set the record for career wins with 37.
2016 Season
The Cardinals finished the season 5-4 after losing in the first round of the playoffs to Baltic. The Cardinals signature win of the season was a comeback win at Clark/Willow Lake who advanced to the quarterfinals of the playoffs. All four losses came to playoff teams with three of those teams advancing in the playoffs. The Cardinals finished fourth in the ECC and qualified for the playoffs for a school record 6th season in a row.
2015 Season
The Cardinals finished the year at 3-6 after losing in the first round of the playoffs to Chester. This was the fifth year in a row in which Deuel has qualified for the playoffs which had not been done in school history. All six losses came to playoff teams with Chester, Hamlin, Webster, and Waverly-South Shore all advancing past the first round of the playoffs. Webster and Waverly-South Shore both advanced to the semi-finals. The Cardinals finished sixth in the Eastern Coteau Conference. On the season Coach Rosdahl moved into second place all-time in wins at Deuel High School/Clear Lake High School. The Cardinals 3-5 regular season record was its first losing regular season since 2010. Despite registering only 3 wins the Cardinals were able to qualify for the playoffs based on its strength of schedule (power points).
2014 Season
The Cardinals would finish the year with a 9-2 record, losing in the semifinals to eventual state champion Gregory. The Cardinals other loss came in the regular season to eventual 9B state champion Hamlin. With 9 wins the team tied for the most wins in school history. The Cardinals finished second in the Eastern Coteau Conference with a 7-1 record. Hamlin was the conference champion going 8-0. The Cardinals finished the season with a 6-0 home record, recording 4 shutouts in the process. Deuel was ranked #3 in the final 9AA polls. The 9-2 record was tied for the best record in school history.
2013 Season
The Cardinals went 4-5 losing in the first round of the playoffs to eventual state champion Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan. The Cardinals came into the season with just a handful of returning letter winners, only one returning full-time starter, no senior letter winners, and making the transition from 11B to 9AA. In what could have been a complete rebuilding year the Cardinals were able to finish the regular season 4-4 and make the playoffs as an at-large team. All five losses came to playoff teams, including the state runner-up in 9B Hamlin and 9AA champion Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan.
2012 Season
The Cardinals went 7-3 losing in the 11B quarterfinals to eventual state runner-up Tri-Valley. Deuel's first round playoff win over Webster was the school's first since 1994. The Cardinals ranked as high as 4th in the state and spent most of the second half of the season ranked 5th. The Cardinals three losses came against teams with a combined record of 30-4 and who all advanced to the semifinals (Flandreau, Roncalli, and Tri-Valley). The 7-3 record was the 4th best in school history and the Cardinals finished the year ranked 5th in the final 11B polls.
2011 Season
The Cardinals went 4-5 losing in the first round of the playoffs to Groton. The team snapped an 18-game losing streak in week two against Sioux Valley and went 4-2 during a key stretch of the season that included that decisive win over Sioux Valley, a big overtime win over Redfield-Doland, and blowout wins over Webster and Sioux Falls Christian.
2010 Season
When the season began the team had lost its last 10 games dating back to the 2008 season. From 2000-2009 the Cardinals had a ten year record of 22-61 with just two playoff appearances. Despite not registering a win in 2010 the team improved in every statistical category and was much more competitive throughout the season. Nine different sophomores registered starts for the Cardinals.
