Writing106 5/3/20 Ethical Reasoning Artifact
For my Ethical Reasoning Artifact, I have selected my Informative Essay. In order to inform my audience, I had to use ethical reasoning so that they could fully understand the topic and issue I was discussing. My ability to assess my own ethical values and the social context of problems, as well as recognize ethical issues in a variety of settings has blossomed throughout this course, and this assignment lead me to creating my persuasive essay where I could use my own voice in terms of social media and the negative impacts it can make in society and the mental health of young people. I had to really dig deep to pull out quotes that supported my own ethical reasoning while informing readers without sounding biased. I had to carefully choose facts over feelings. I simply stated what others had researched and confirmed about the effects that Google places on people, teenagers specifically. I think this essay was informative and provides concrete ethical reasoning to a current topic that directly addresses my target audience. I was challenged and pushed as a writer with this assignment and learned to closely look at facts and information regarding ethics and belief systems then translate those into a paper. Overall, I was very passionate about my topic and I think that shows in my writing in this assignment. I liked that my own ethics and beliefs matched up with those of the researchers and experts that I was quoting so that I did not need to use my personal voice while still getting the message across. I look forward to writing more pieces utilizing ethical reasoning in the future and applying ethics to my every day life.
Fall Ethics Event October 23, 2019 Dr. Julia Garcia was ABSOLUTELY amazing today. I absorbed everything she had to say and much of it translated to me personally. She noted many times that this generation must start contributing more to the culture in which we immerse ourselves in each and every day. When we reel in information from Instagram and Facebook, we are filling our minds with whatever is projected on our screens (even the negative components). Instead of genuinely contributing to society, we scroll for a few hours, click a like button, and comment things to our friends now and then. Dr. Garcia advised all of us to fix this behavior and I am more than willing to do so. I find raw relationships and conversations with people to be so much more fulfilling than "connecting" via social media platforms. Dr. Garcia's points were both provocative and pertained greatly to all students at Bryant and elsewhere. It was extremely beneficial for myself and all of my peers to hear how we can contribute to our Bryant culture and society in general.
