April 20, 2018 - Referee Clinic
Walter Beuhler from Pickleball Alberta lead a referee clinic at our club. He is only one of three certified referees in the province of Alberta. It was very well received. Anyone who is interested in being a referee, you can check these links out:

It is important that everyone be familiar with and follows the rules of conduct and practice set out by the CLSA and Pickleball Club.
Code of Practice
· Code of Conduct
All members and/or their guests will be expected to abide by the following:
o Learn and play by the official rules of pickleball as set out by the USAPA.
o Be a good sport – win with modesty and lose with dignity.
o Participate in Club play demonstrating good sportsmanship, respect, consideration and appreciation towards opponents, partners, officials, guests and staff of the facility.
o Under no circumstances act in an intimidating manner or use any form of foul or abusive language or gestures.
o Dress in safe and appropriate attire including proper non-marking footwear.
o The Pickleball Club falls under the rules and policies of CLSA and infractions which contravene their policies will be subject to their disciplinary actions.
Failure to abide by the Code of Conduct may result in Disciplinary Measures. (Refer to Discipline Policy)
Approved by CLSA Executive Committee May 25, 2010.
· Discipline Policy
All members must uphold the CLSA Pickleball Club Code of Conduct Discipline Policy and must comply with all applicable and implied rules and regulations associated with the operation of the Club.
The CLSA Pickleball Executive may suspend a member for a period of time as deemed appropriate for one or more of the following reasons, but not limited to:
1) if the member has failed to abide by the Code of Conduct
2) if the member has disrupted meetings or functions
3) if the member has done anything harmful to the operation of the Club
The affected member shall receive:
1) a verbal warning
2) a written warning
3) a termination of membership effective immediately
The Document will describe the reason(s) why the Discipline Policy has been initiated. The decision of the Executive Committee is final. All Club financial matters concerning the individual(s) will be forfeited/cancelled immediately except for monies that are currently in arrears.
The Club Secretary will file all disciplinary actions with CLSA.
Approved by CLSA Executive Committee May 25, 2010.
Please read the Code of Practice, as the Executive will be enforcing it, beginning immediately.
Philosophical Thought of the Day from a wise club member, Ajit:
We play pickleball at CLSA for both mind and body. When we are not on the court, we learn something from others; we learn to socialize well and we learn some patience. A person doesn’t train for the Olympics
in a Seniors Centre.
Club Guidelines
When placing your paddles in the appropriate line up and waiting to play, please remember that even if there is only one paddle in the line up, that person plays next with the next three people who want to play with him/her. If you want to play as a specific group of four, you must place your four paddles behind the single paddle, and wait your turn. If you have any questions please feel free to talk to any member of the Executive.
A reminder that CLSA members can book courts
on Thursday afternoons
from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
$8 per court
Book at the Fitness Centre Desk.

Club Guidelines
When you arrive to play please:
• Put your name on your racquet
• Sign in on the attendance sheet
• Wear a name tag (paper name tags are provided)
• Place your paddle in the appropriate line up and wait to play
• Be attentive and ready to play when it's your turn
• Follow the Flexible Skill Level System of Play (see website)
o Tuesday and Thursday a.m.
§ Gold/Silver System before 10:00 a.m.
§ Flexible Skills System after 10:00 (Group A and Group B)
o Friday p.m.
§ Gold/Silver System, unless sufficient numbers warrant Flexible Skills System (change over will be at 1:30 p.m.)
• Check the notice board for announcements
Daily Procedures
• Please help in setting up nets before play begins:
o Correct height is the bottom side of the tape
o Poles can be found in the storage room behind 1st door
o Nets for the club, marked “PB”, can be found in locker marked “Pickleball” with combination lock.
(Combination is 001 or 100 depending on the position of the lock)
o End of each session (a.m. and p.m.) help take the nets down:
§ Nets are to be placed in the locker and the last person is asked to scramble the combination
§ Balls and cones to be placed in plastic bin marked Pickleball
§ Chairs are to be stacked, maximum of eight
• It is very important to sign in, as this helps Dinesh and AK who have to report attendance every day
• Wear a name tag
• A big thank you to everyone who helps out in the setting up and putting away of equipment
Self-Assessment
The executive is proposing a Self Assessment approach to help divide our
membership into Group A, Group B, Group AB.
• A list of the members will be posted on the Bulletin Board.
• Each member will check off if they want to play with the A Group (Top Competitive Players) or the B Group.
• You may also check off if you want to be in the AB Group. This means
that you are willing to play with either the A Group or B Group depending on the number of players in each Group that day. This would keep the two groups balanced.
• This split would take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:00 a.m.
and on Friday at 1:30 p.m. if sufficient numbers warrant it, as we have been doing in the past.
Video clip on the serve:
We would encourage everyone to watch this short video on the serve, as there
are a number of us, believe it or not, who are actually using an illegal serve. Are
you one of these people???

hoping to lose weight. Haven’t lost a pound. Apparently you have to
show up.”

Ø Please note that the CLSA will be closed December 24th, 25th, 26th
Ø Post Rule starting January, 2015
As of January a ball hitting the net post will be called a fault. Prior to this a ball hitting the post has been a re-serve, but in reviewing the USAPA rules (which are followed by Pickelball Canada) we have revised this rule, and in January will consider the post as out of bounds.
The rules 12.1 and 7.G refer to ‘permanent objects’ and ‘net posts’ and as the net post is considered a permanent object, balls that hit the net post are considered a fault on the player that hit the ball.
When playing in the New Year please remember to call the ball that hits the post as “out”.
Ø New Guest Policy
Out of Town Guests (6 days maximum per calendar year)
- 1st day is free
- After that $5.00/day to a maximum of 5 days
In Town Guests (2 days maximum)
- 1st day is free
- 2nd day $5.00
Guests will purchase bands from Dinesh.
Ø “Pickleball for Fun” Club
Runs Tuesdays from 1-4 pm, January 6th to March 31st
- Must be a member of the CLSA
- User fee: $13.00
- Club fee: $3.00
Ø Name Tag Policy
In January we will likely be welcoming new members. To let them know who you are and to get to know their names, please wear a name tag and invite them to do the same. Paper nametags are available on the bulletin board. We are a friendly club and it is a courtesy to wear a nametag.
The Executive will be reminding members to wear a nametag and we encourage members to remind others to do the same.
Ø Membership to Date for 2015
- 64 annual members
- 2 summer members
Ø Christmas Luncheon
- 29 members attended
- Thank You Richard for organizing the Christmas Luncheon at the Ramada Inn on December 9th. Everyone seemed to be pleased with the meal, location, and especially the socialization.
Check the link to view the Christmas Luncheon photos. Thanks Mario.https://plus.google.com/photos/103271621962873799839/albums/6091044859094832817?authkey=CODFzIS_ydORXw pickleball clsa XMAS
Ø Club Courtesy
A gentle reminder: It is discourteous to move another player’s paddle, and rude to kick the ball across the courts. Good sportsmanship and manners are always appreciated.
Ø Treasurer’s Position
Now that Lloyd is the Acting President, we will need someone to take his place as Treasurer
If you have accounting skills or interests, we would love to hear from you. Feel free to talk to anyone on the Executive for additional information.
Ø On behalf of the Executive, a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone.
Georges
