Help us prevent injuries by using common sense to keep us all safe in the sport we love.
- Entering the gym. Safety starts when we enter the gym. Entering by the East entrance of the gym interfers with the players on the first court. Please use the North entrance for safety and courtesy. The doors “furthest” from the locker rooms are the north entrance.
- Backing up on the court. If you aren’t fully comfortable with your balance, try turn sideways or pivot to avoid falling when moving backwards on the court.
- Know where the walls are when you are playing. Keep in mind the proximity of the wall(s) when retrieving the ball bouncing over the line. A few members have sustained injuries colliding with the walls. These injuries are preventable if we increase our awareness of inanimate objects.
- Behind the court chatter. Standing behind the back line of a court and talking is distracting to the ones playing in front of us. After your game, make your way to the chairs or the bleachers so as not to interfere with the game being played.
- Short cuts through the sideline or backline of an active court. After you have finished your game, be polite and take the “long way” around the lines of the next court. Cutting through someone else’s space is not only distracting, but rude to other players.
- Chasing the ball into another court. Don’t do it when a game is in play. Following this courtesy, we can increase safety and prevent injuries. Likewise, return errant balls to the next court as soon as the opportunity arises, even if a re-serve is necessary.
- Invite newer players to play with you. If you think that you’re really, really good; share your skill and expertise with the ones of us that aren’t that good yet. You might make a new friend.
- Line calls. Be sure of your call before you call your opponents’ ball in or out. It is best to wait for the ball to bounce before making a call.
- Warm up before you play. You can prevent injuries by warming up before you play. If you would like tips on proper ways to warm up staff at the Fitness Centre are happy to help. Please consult them.
