Introduction

Efforts have been reported to make use of 3d printing for making mask, 3d printing shows the possibility to alleviate mask shortage [1]. However, the replication may take a long time, unless multiple printers were used to print in parallel. Although methods for reproduction exists, these methods require specialized huge and expensive machines (e.g., injection molding). Therefore, this work proposes the use of vacuum forming for replication of mask that can be easily achieved by portable machines [2, 3].

Method

Vacuum forming (inspired from post by Vaquform) technique was employed for this work.

Results

(Fig. A) A computer mouse and parts of plastic vials (cutout) were used as mold. (Fig. B) HIPS plastic sheet was vacuum formed. Mouse removed. Holes were to be cut at locations indicated. (Fig. C) Vial caps were screwed into the threads made by the vials. (Fig. D) Final outcome.

Conclusion

This design demonstrates [i] to shorten the time to reproduce the replica after having the first 3d printed design, [ii] the feasibility of integrating the vacuum formed parts to other components (i.e. threads of the vial cap in this case), and [iii] can be easily homemade (vacuum cleaner, plastic sheet and heat gun) [2].

Important note and disclaimer

This design is not clinically/medically proven or tested!!

Any action you take upon using this information on this website/in the attached document is strictly at your own risk, and i shall not be liable for any losses and damages in connection with the use of this website/document.

Note that i just want to offer alternatives, and not to conclude which is better, each methods have their pros and cons. By the way I am much of a 3d printing fan!!

Outlook

Wish to share this one-off immature result (since I am currently working in a different research topic), and hope someone who is more capable, resourceful, and skillful will continue, modify, or benefit from the prototype here.

More importantly, wishing everyone continues to stay strong and healthy!!! And speedy recovery for those who are infected!!!
