Of the dozen or so world views competing with Biblical Christianity, a few stand out as particularly challenging.
Before discussing the competitors to Biblical Christian world view, here are the principal characteristics of Biblical Christianity for the purpose of this article. (see also Apostasy in the Christian Church for another summary of the essentials)
The Bible (Old and New Testaments) is the infallible Word of God; it presents historical reality as the backddrop for moral truth
Jesus is the son and perfect personification of God who took human form to be an example for us
Jesus voluntarily gave His life as a sacrificial payment to cover the cost of humans (each of us, personally) falling short of God's standards
We cannot gain eternal life in the heavenly realm without belief and trust in Jesus Christ for the work He has done in our behalf
Moral absolutes are a requirement for the unity of Biblical themes, as is the reality of all reported miracles including the death, resurrection and life of Jesus Christ
God loves us and desires that we follow His commands
Faith is essential but belief and adherence are voluntary.
Faith, works, and our salvation are individual responsibilities; our salvation does not depend on the behavior of the collective of all other individuals or the government authority.
Other terms that fall under the umbrella of "Biblical Christians" include conservative Christians, orthodox Christians, fundamentalist Christians, and some evangelical Christians, not all. The non-orthodox Jehovah's Witnesses and Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) have more in common with "Biblical Christians" than they do with "Liberal Christians." Most mainline protestant church denominations no longer fit within the category of Biblical Christianity, but have more in common with the Liberal Christian world view, below.
So now, here are the other world views that compete with the Biblical Christian world view:
Liberal Christian
Humanistic
Islamic
Here is a brief descriptions of each:
Liberal Christian world view: The Bible is a collection of stories; not infallible; miracles are merely sensationalistic object lessons; Christ is not really "the son of God"; Christ was never really "resurrected"; Biblical morality is related only to the culture of the day and not applicable to today; morality is relative to the situation; there are no moral absolutes. Tolerance is the highest ideal; judging others is forbidden because no ones values or actions are better or worse than anyone else's. The "social gospel" (reliance on and promotion of the government to satisfy the social needs of society) is more important than Biblical faith and individual responsibility. Usually theistic, but may include agnostics. Progressives, liberals, and socialists comprise many holding to this world view.
Reality: Liberal Christians are apostates and liberal churches promote heresy. These will be held accountable.
Humanistic world view: Completely jettison reliance on the Bible or any aspect of Christianity but otherwise shares all the other features of the Liberal Christian world view. May be agnostic or atheist. Progressives, liberals, socialists, fascists, and communists are major components of this group.
Reality: Humanists are faithless lost souls who often mock the very idea of "God" as well as those of faith - all to justify their choices.
Islamic world view: As in Communism, the end justifies the means. Any otherwise immoral behavior justifies the expansion of Islam including deception, lying and terror. Islam holds that Muhammad is the most perfect human being who should be emulated in all aspects of life. The Qur'an, Haddith, and Sira (the Trilogy) are the most important guides for life. Promotes a "dualistic" mindset, i.e., can believe two or more conflicting truths at the same time; Taqiyya (deception to promote Islam) and abrogation (the doctrine that the violent and intolerant later verses of the Qur'an take precedence over the earlier more peaceful verses) are essential doctrinal components of Islam. Submission to Allah (a "moon god" which is distinct from the Judeo-Christian God) is required. The "good Muslim" will be devoted to personal and outward Jihad to peaceably or forcibly bring all non-Muslims into submission to Islam. The majority of verses in the Trilogy pertain to the infidel and how the Muslim shall think and act toward the infidel. Consequently, Islam is more a coercive political ideology than it is a religion. Both "moderate" and "radical" Muslims promote this world view, either peaceably through social, economic, legal, or political action, or violently through threats, intimidation, and acts terror, depending on what is most expeditious for the situation.
Reality: Islam is both a violent and coercive political ideology and a Satanic religion virtually opposite Christianity in many respects.
Interestingly, these three diverse world views share many things in common. Here are several:
Mocking, demeaning, or minimizing Christianity, and highlighting failings of Christian leaders or denominations. An example of this is the opening story on mainstream network news being the conviction of a Catholic priest found guilty of not adequately addressing sex abuse a number of years ago, when on the same day the following was also occurring. You be the judge of what is more leading headline-worthy:
Turkish military aircraft shot down over Syria while Russia sends in troops: What might follow?
15 banks downgraded and the several additional indicators that the European economy is disintegrating: How does this affect investors and borrowers?
President holds "gay pride" party in the White house where guests flip off portraits of Ronald Reagan: The moral trashing of the White House.
Tensions in Egypt mount with military challenge of Muslim Brotherhood victory in presidential election: A repeat of the Arab Spring looming?
This occurs almost every night of network news. It is commonplace for anti-Christian news stories to be elevated along with news promoting corrupt pop-cultural activities while news that actually affects our lives is either ignored or a 10-second sound bite. Those who are either liberal Christians, Humanists, or Muslims share a common desire to mock or demean traditionalist Christians. Liberal Christians mock any mode of Christianity that interprets the Bible as more than semi-useful fiction. Humanists dismiss most Christian doctrine as being unnecessarily confining fairy tales, and Islam holds a 1,400-year hatred of Christians and Jews. Only through their doctrine of taqiyya do they pretend any semblance of Christian tolerance.
Coercion. Coercion by the government or collective society (mob rule) via penalties, taxes, threats, severe police or military tactics, loss of freedoms, intimidation, violence, or death are the acceptable means of gaining acquiescence. This is in contrast to the Biblical Christian world view that values freedom of conscience and liberty as the basis for gaining favorable opinion and support for beliefs, programs, or causes.
Pro-big government, more government regulation, higher taxes, and less individual freedom. The "social gospel" promoted by liberal Christians demands more government intervention, spending, and control directed at individuals. Humanism likewise promotes the idea of a constantly evolving status of humanity that requires bigger government to plan, regulate and monitor increasing areas of everyones lives and activities, from the food we eat, the exercise we engage in, and the words we are allowed to speak in the spirit of amorality, not to mention the taxes we are required to pay and the countless laws we are required to obey. Islam joins liberal Christians and Humanists in their their promotion of control of all aspects of our lives. The Sharia is the body of Islamic law that would impose an authoritarian code that will implement this all-encompassing control.
All three of these competing world views share a common objective to control individual behavior through a centralized elitist authority that is deemed to have all the answers for organizing and progressing society toward their desired goals.
General and over-riding belief that the "collective" is more important than the individual. The "social gospel" of the liberal Christians, the progression of humanity through government planning by the Humanists, and the authoritarian world-wide caliphate desired by Islam all place an all-powerful authoritative government as essential to their vision of progress. The individual is nothing more than an obstacle that needs to be reprogrammed, controlled, disciplined, and coerced into conformity for the common good as determined by the doctrine of the authority in power.
Tolerance toward things which undermine Biblical morality is one of the highest values; judging based on moral absolutes is a form of bigotry or -ophobia. Both Liberal Christians and Humanist share their elevated desire to tolerate just about any human behavior and disdain Biblical morality. Accusations of "homo-phobia" is their common insult to morality. Muslims promote tolerance while they remain a small minority in a particular culture. Accusations of "Islamo-phobia" is their common insult to legitimate concerns about the fascist heart of Islam. But their doctrine demands intolerance once they gain numbers and control within a particular culture, whether it is an urban "no-go" zone (many parts of London; parts of Dearborn, MI) or an entire nation (Saudi Arabia; Lebonon, the "new" Egypt).
