Some would have us believe we were never a Christian nation - that the United States was founded by a bunch of atheists and liberal progressives. What do these people mean by "Christian nation" that we "never were?" One that intolerantly beheaded non-Christians? No, they must be thinking of Muslim nations who behead Muslim infidels. We were never that kind of Christian nation. We were a nation founded by Christians. Our founders were Christians possessing various degrees of Christian belief. Our legal and governing systems are based on Biblical principles carried to this continent by men schooled in a Christian culture and trained in Christian doctrine. Our nation was formed to allow freedom of practice of various forms of Christianity, as well as any other or no religion, but principally Christianity. Other religions were at least "tolerated." The great majority of elected officials, from the date of our founding through the present, have been either devout or nominal Christians.
This section explores the influence of Christianity in the founding of our nation, from the pre-revolution period through the decline of Christian influence over the last several decades.
