On February 19, 2026, Alpha Pi Chapter members learned about the "Teaching as a Profession" program offered at Chatham Central High School. Teacher Amy King and student Peyton Douglas shared the 3-courses that give students an opportunity to explore the field of education while earning college credit.
The three courses Peyton Douglas has experienced at Chatham Central are as follows:
FE21 Teaching as a Profession I
FE22 Teaching as a Profession II
FE23 Profession Field Experience
Ms Douglas' field experience is at one of Chatham Central's sister schools - Bennett School (K-8). Peyton said this program has helped tremendously in her decision to pursue a teaching career in college.
Instructor Amy Smith King:
Masters in Education
National Board Certified Teacher
2020 Grosvenor Teacher Fellow
2019 Gilder Lehrman North Carolina History Teacher of the Year (TOY) and National Finalist EPF
American History
Teaching As A Profession (TAAP)
Teacher and Student Government Advisor

Economics and Personal Finance Certified Teacher
Mrs. King worked with Meredith College to supervise student teachers (Methods Teacher Courses). In addition to all of her accomplishments, this experience led to her being the best person to lead this program at Chatham Central.
