My name is Chas Wilson and I am a secondary Social Studies teacher. I have taught a variety of courses including AP Macroeconomics, Economics, World History, World Cultures, US History, American Civics & Government, Global Conflicts, and Sociology. But there is a lot more to me than just my job/profession!
As you can see below, for this course we were required to create something called a 'Concept Map.' Concept maps pick a particular topic and look to explain that topic by showing visuals of the different components of that topic.
My concept map breaks down ME! I felt that the four things that best showed who I was were work, soccer, activities, and family & friends. For each component I included a few pictures from my life.
How/why would we use this tool?
ISTE NETS*T Standard 2.d: Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments.
You can use concepts maps for any topic! What you are essentially doing is providing your students with a blank canvas and asking them to produce something based on their knowledge. A teacher can adjust what is produced by adjusting the directions and guidelines for what the students need to produce. This flexibility allows teachers to use this tool as a multi-purpose assessment tool (formative or summative).
As an added bonus you can get to know your students learning styles and approach to assessments while assessing their base ability to use technology!
