Gardening, etc
Gardening, etc
We look after the gardens around the Community Centre and Marish children’s playground, as well as the areas below. We plant to increase biodiversity to support our eco systems - soil, insects, birds. We grow using organic methods and do not use any chemicals.
Community Garden
By the Marish children’s playground and started in 2019 with 4 raised beds funded by a grant from the Town Council. Since then the garden has gradually grown with additional beds and containers.
Warwick in Bloom
We won the Community Participation Category in 2024 even though we got Silver Gilt - not our usual Gold. This year we have been working hard to go for Gold.
Community Orchard
Planted in Tapping Way park in November 2024, funded through the King’s Coronation Fund. Improvements to come by adding more wild flowers.
Tapping Way
We are managing an area of County Council land at the Stratford Road end with some meadow work to encourage a wide range of wild flowers and grasses. 3 oak trees have been planted at the far side of the park. We have worked with the WDC Green Spaces Team to protect the bee orchids on the verge at the far side of the park.
Plant Sale
We have our annual plant sale in June in the Great Big Green Week to help cover our annual expenses.
Blackbades Boulevard Wildflower Project
These beautiful flowers were planted as part of a project to enhance an area on Blackbades Boulevard - which was previously made up of mainly grasses, weeds and a lot of nettles. Local residents wanted to do something to improve the area, and put out a call for volunteers to clear the ground and then sow wildflower seeds. The response was amazing and the volunteers have formed a warm, friendly group – evidenced by 17 attending a wonderful communal barbeque in July, where again everybody mucked in. We have had a number of volunteer sessions over the past year or so and this year the results have been stunning, and enjoyed by so many residents. They have also helped provide diverse habitat for the insect population, and the array of bees, butterflies and moths in that area is wonderful to see and hear. Thank you to all the volunteers that have worked so hard, and also Warwick District Council Green Spaces Team who are supporting us in our endeavours. Hedge Laying Update
The District Council laid another long length of hedge near Bromhurst Way. The Community Gardeners planted climbers that were supplied by the Council. These were honeysuckle, hops and perennial sweet pea. 2 nearby residents kindly did a lot of watering to get them established. Thanks to them for that essential aftercare.
No Mow May 2025
Warwick District Council have taken a different approach this year, leaving some areas unmown until late summer, allowing the flowers and grasses to set seed, and to provide habitat and plants for egg laying for wildlife throughout the summer. The area at the end of Purser Drive has been left and also the verge on Tapping Way, where the bee orchids are. When the grass is long it also protects the soils and stores carbon, whereas close cut grass leaves the soil exposed and unprotected. If there are other areas you think could be left unmown all summer contact chasemeadowra@googlemail.com
