Back in 1950, Cliff and Aileen Meyer drove to the Black Mountain Area from Miami Beach, Florida. They stayed at the the Alexander Stage Coach Inn in Swannanoa for a short visit.
One year later, they drove back to Black Mountain and during that visit they purchased 140 acres from Mr. Pale Padgett based on a handshake. The price was $6,000. This was the beginning of the Char-Mel-Dee Acres subdivision.
The neighborhood is named after the Meyer's four daughters, by taking the first few letters of each daughter's name: Charlene, Melanie, Melissa, and Diane.
In 1954 the Meyers created the Sky-Hi subdivision by purchasing the land above Charmeldee Acres for $35,000. The Meyers created other sub-divisions in the Black Mountain area too: Sunset Meadows, Meadowbrook, Bee Tree Heights, Oaken Hill, Hickory Ridge, and Tree Haven.
It is also rumored that the man who built the neighborhood roads ran a still deep in the woods. The water for the still came from a spring near Diana Drive. Don't worry, the still is no longer there!
This neighborhood history was from an interview with Mrs. Aileen Meyer by Don Page on October 26, 2002.
