Intro to the Raingutter Regatta
The Raingutter Regatta (RR) is a racing event for Cub Scouts that is the sailboat equivalent of the pinewood derby. Within the basic design rules, Scouts are free to paint and decorate their sailboats as they choose.
The boats are raced in a standard rain gutter (although Pack 3 has blow-up gutters) that is ten feet long, placed on a table and filled to the top with water. The boats are propelled by blowing on the sail, either directly or through a drinking straw; the boat cannot be touched with hands or the straw. The first boat to reach the end of the gutter is the winner. The overall winner is determined by an elimination system.
Cost for the Raingutter Regatta
The Pack pays for the boats for those scouts registered
These boats will be distributed at the Month Pack meeting. Otherwise, parents may purchase the boat from the Scout Store or online. The boat cost about $5. Pack 3 uses the Trimaran "catamaran" style boat.
Logistics
If you are planning to participate, please make sure to let your Den Leader know. We need to set the race brackets on Friday night before the race.
The race starts promptly at TBD, but you should plan to arrive early to register your boat with the Pack 3 Port Authority.
The race rules and procedures will be emailed to participants prior to the race.
What to Bring
Bring your custom painted/decorated boat and a smile! You can dress in your Class A or Class B uniform. For information on uniforms go Here
Parent Volunteer Opportunities
Please see the following volunteer opportunities and let our Pack Leader, Chris Lundin, know if you can help and if you have a specific request:
Port Authority (need 2) – job is to register boats / captains and keep the boats safe while not racing
Set Up (need 2) – job is to set up the raingutters, fill them with water and to test to make sure that both gutters are even – need to be at the church 1 hour before the event. Judges (need 3) – job is to ensure the race is run fairly…making sure the scouts only move their boats by blowing in the sails and determining the winners. Crowd Control (need 3) – while we encourage everyone to cheer on each other, it is often difficult to keep the scouts focused for so long, especially after they have lost. Clean Up (need 2) - making sure the chairs are returned and raingutters are emptied.
For more information please contact your den leader. Chris Lundin, is the Pack leader for this event.
