Digital holography can obtain the complex field from the object. If the camera is not at imaging plane which is the case in many settings such as real time imaging of moving cells, the complex field needs to be numerically propagated to the imaging plane. Two problems arise: 1) what numerical method is needed? 2) how do you find the image plane? The first problem can be answered by discretization of wave diffraction theory. The second problem can be solved by find proper image metrics.
