The Royal Alexandra Hospital (Royal Alex), located at 10240 Kingsway NW (bordering/within easy walking distance of Central McDougall), features the Ted & Lois Hole Healing Garden — a renowned rooftop green roof healing garden opened in 2011 as part of the Lois Hole Hospital for Women (Robbins Pavilion, 2nd floor).
This peaceful, multi-level oasis (one of the largest accessible green roofs in Alberta) serves as a public place of healing, refuge, and reflection for patients, families, staff, and visitors. It includes areas of extensive, semi-intensive, and intensive green roofs with colourful plants, grasses, trees, raised water features, artistic glasswork screens/trellises, and benches. Designed to strengthen wellbeing through nature, it's a colourful, tranquil haven visible from patient rooms and adjacent to the Robbins Chapel (a spiritual sanctuary for prayer and services). It's not strictly a "meditation garden" but functions as one for quiet contemplation, relaxation, and connection to nature in an urban hospital setting.
Central McDougall has access to playgrounds at local schools (often open to the public outside school hours, though primarily for students; check City/school policies for access). Key ones include:
John A. McDougall School (K-6 public elementary, 10930 107 Street) Playground: Features play structures and open space (recent basketball court redo noted in community projects, enhancing recreation). It's school-based but contributes to neighbourhood play options, with imaginative elements suitable for younger children.
St. Catherine School (K-6 Catholic elementary, nearby in the area) Playground: All-turf surface with fun features like the famous “Dino climb” structure, climbers, and other equipment for active play.
Victoria School of the Arts (K-12 arts-focused public school, in/near the neighbourhood) Limited access to playground (internal courtyard), but school grounds include outdoor spaces for recreation and arts-related activities.
Sports/Recreation: Volleyball court (in Central McDougall Park); basketball court (recent redo at John A. McDougall School grounds, which borders/relates to park use); nearby tennis court.
