In 1995, the Central Coast Chapter of the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) erected a plaque to remember the first recorded landing of Filipinos on American shores in 1587. These Filipinos, described as “Luzones Indios” in the ship’s log, were sailors aboard a Spanish galleon that traveled between Acapulco, Mexico and Manila in the Philippines.
Organizations like FANHS, the local community involved in preserving the memory of the P.I. Market, as well as individuals have grown the knowledge of Filipino Americans on the Central Coast. This exhibit is evolving, and we welcome any contributions and additions to these exhibit walls that can help us cultivate this little known story.
Lompoc mural should be covered in this section too.
