Simon Abney-Hastings was born in 1974, the son of Michael Abney-Hastings, and grandson of Barbara Abney-Hastings, 13th Countess of Loudoun. When Barbara died in 2002, her son "Mike" became the 14th Earl of Loudoun, and upon his death 30 Jun 2012, his son is now the 15th Earl of Loudoun.
In 2005, a British documentary team "conducted extensive research" to determine whether, if Edward IV, King of England were illegitimate, who would be the rightful Monarch of England, and decided it was Michael Abney-Hastings.
