Avoid substances that disrupt sleep
Alcohol can help people fall asleep, but it causes significant disruptions to sleep quality, including suppressing REM sleep (dream sleep), and promotes upper airway instability and sleep apnea. Foods containing tyramine (e.g., bacon, ham, pepperoni, eggplant, raspberries, avocado, nuts, soy sauce, red wine) can also disrupt sleep quality.
Many medications can contribute to insomnia as a side effect, and so it is advisable that you consult with your prescribing physician regarding any medications you are taking.
