Modify unhelpful sleep-related beliefs
Sometimes, people with insomnia have developed beliefs about sleep that are unhelpful. In CBT-I particular attention is given to any beliefs which result in a person either continuing to engage in sleep interfering behaviors and/or reduce their willingness to make recommended behavioral changes.
Methods to address these beliefs include encouraging the person to:
Learn more about sleep, insomnia, and CBT-I.
Consider the evidence for and against a belief.
Be willing to try new behaviors to see if the belief is necessarily true
