WAYS IN WHICH YOU CAN HELP

Start a Student-Run Recycling Club

Teachers, students, and adininstrators at our school can participate in the ongoing effort to reduce, reuse, and compost. Each classroom, copy room, and office has at least one recycling bin, in addtiona we can have bins in the gym, music room, art room, cafeteria, and computer room.

Plant a Tree, or trees

Trees not only remove harmful chemicals from the soil, but also help reduce the greenhouses leading to global warming. Go on and see how planting trees helps the environment. Reduce global warming simply by planting trees for the environment.

Recycle Newspapers & Magazines to Create Fabulous Art Projects

Recycliing is the easiset way to help our word. When we recycle, we reduce the amount of materials companies need to make products (plastics, glass, metal, etc) and companies are forced to reuse the materials instead of using new resources from the earth.

Create a Birdhouse Habitat Around Your Playground

Ever heard brids sing? Ever notice how some birds have the coolest colors? Well, birds love trees and places they can rest. Would it not be nice if birds had a place to hang and play in the school grounds? Students can create a habitat for these brids and post around the yard or home. Ask teachers and paretns to help create on eof these.

Go Paperless

Teachers spend a lot of paper giving copies to students, parents, and peers. In addition, students spent so much paper when they work on projects, homework and dailty activites. Would it not be nice if we can reduce the amount of paper we use? Did you know paper comes from tress? Yes, and we have a limited amount of trees in the word.

Organize a community garden

Student can organize a school community garden where students can learn about nature and plant their favorite vegatable and and care for it. A community school garden or home garden will help you learn about how nature works, the life cycle, cand give a relaxing time when working on it.

Use less water and energy

The state of California is going a severs drought, and water will be scarce in the next couple of years. Therefore, conserving water is important. Please don't waste water when you are in the shower, make your shoer short. Don't waste water by lettin it run when you are washing your hands, brishing your teeth, cleaing objects, etc.

Energy produces heat, so uses less energy makes things cool. Turn off the lights in the classroom, at home, and everywhere where the lights are on and are not needed, switch it off!

This is my favorite Earth Day story. It is out of print, but you can still get a hold of a copy. The illustrations and the message inspire children to care about the earth and its living things.

The Lorax by Dr. Seuss

Another favorite of mine — and it's now out in the theaters in 3-D! What a wonderful message it sends to kids about taking care of our earth. It also communicates that each child, no matter how small, can make a difference.

Our Big Home: An Earth Poem by Linda Glaser

This is a sweet poem about places and things on our earth that we share and that are special. It has wonderful word choice to model in writers’ workshop.

Science Vocabulary Readers: The Earth by Megan Duhamel

A simple science reader with great photos, The Earth provides a wonderful introduction to the topic.

Our Earth by Anne Rockwell

This book is a kid-friendly way to begin a discussion about the earth and to introduce basic earth science concepts.

Big Earth, Little Me by Thom Wiley

I do not have this book, but it looks like a cute one. It’s a lift-the-flap book with simple sentences to get young kids wanting to help the earth. I especially need this one for my two sons!

Songs

My mom, who is a kindergarten teacher as well, shared her favorite Earth Day songs with me. Thanks, Mom!
