Lesson: Internet Safety: How can I be a responsible user?

What will we learn?

1. Understand all places have safety rules.

2. Define the internet as a "place" and list different activities students do on the internet.

I. Introduction: Places Around Us

Activate student's prior knowledge about familiar places:

  • The classroom
  • The playground
  • The home

Students answer/discuss the following questions with a partner or as a class about each place

  • What activities happen in this place?
  • What people do you connect with in this place?

Share the student responses.

Next, ask the students to consider the rules they follow in each of these places.

  • What rules do we follow in this place?
  • Are there different rules for different people in each place?
  • Why do we have rules?

II. Development: Internet Safety

Introduce to "The Internet" to the students as another place we visit.

  • Define the internet and discuss: "The internet is a system of connected/linked computer networks. It allows information to be shared and people to communicate all over the world. It includes email and the World Wide Web."
  • Encourage students to identify the different tools that students use to access the internet in the diagram.
  • List with the students the activities and people they connect with on the internet.
  • Have the students list some rules for safety they think should be followed when online using the Pre-Assessement Student Tool Handout or having them list some ideas as a group.

III. JOYful Digital Citizens

As a class, explain that we follow rules to be good students, and daughters. It is how we ensure that we keep everyone safe and happy in our world. We have discussed the rules for safety, and now we need to write them down as a class and agree to these rules in order to be able to have safe use of the internet and internet devices in our classrooms.
