History

The Colorado NICA affiliate league held its first season of competition in Colorado in 2010. The inaugural season included a team of student athletes from Crested Butte, coached by Torrey Carroll. Every year since then Torrey has led a dedicated and growing group of athletes, coaches, and volunteers to represent Crested Butte and participate in the fastest growing high school sport in the state of Colorado: mountain biking. Some of our student athletes have gone on to compete at the college level and all of them enjoy the benefits of personal development, fitness, and great memories that mountain biking offers.

In 2015 the Crested Butte High School Race team accomplished their best finish ever: 9 of our 12 athletes qualified for state, earning us a 5th place team finish in a competitive Division 2 field. Furthermore, two of our athletes earned top 5 podium spots in the State Championships. Finally, for the 2015 season, our Crested Butte High School Team earned a 2nd place trophy in the Division 2, South Conference, state of Colorado.

In 2016 Torrey leads our team into our 7th season with 18 student athletes, bumping us up into the Division 1 category! To prepare for this growth, in the summer of 2016, Torrey reflected on his goals for the coming years and, with the help of the Parent Leadership Committee, created a plan to achieve the team's most ambitious goal ever: to become one of the best high school race teams in the state of Colorado! We finished the Conference championships in 5th place (just 1 point away from 4th), and finished the state championships ranked 10th as a team.

In 2017 we have 32 student-athletes on the team. That represents over 15% of the CBCS secondary school student body! Our challenge now is maintaining the high-quality experience our families appreciate, despite nearly tripling in size in three years. We finished the 2017 season with a 6th place team finish in Division 1 and 9th place as a team in the state championships.

In 2018 we have 30 student-athletes on the team.
