SEWING
Sewing forms part of the demonstration department. It allows the street children the opportunity to learn how to use a sewing machine. The exercise helps the children - especially the girls - choose their future profession. The lessons take place every day at the Refuge and at Hopeland. The children are taught stage by stage and learn how to hem clothes using a needle and thread.
The children are also taught how to fix a thread into the machine. After this, they are taught to sew on a straight edge, using paper while they are still beginners. Children are taught how to cut shapes to make dresses and we also teach them about measurements. When they are successful at the training, the begin to make baby clothes. These clothes are then displayed in the sewing room.
