This three session course explores the theme of the growth of the democratic system in American History. Through the lives, struggles, and accomplishments of ordinary and extraordinary Americans, events of American history and American society, the theme of an expanding democracy is explored. In these three sessions the elements of increased opportunity, equality, and civil rights will be explored. The first session begins with the story of Prudence Crandall, the Connecticut State Heroine, who in the 1830s dared to establish a school for young black girls in Canterbury, Connecticut. The second session explores the life and times of a quiet American hero, Ebenezer D. Bassett, the first black ambassador from the United States. The third session brings the titanic seventy year struggle for women’s suffrage to the audience through period photos, political cartoons, and editorials, and examines the lives of the women who devoted their lives to the cause so that future generations of American women would have the right to participate fully in American society.
