Currently I am a research scientist in the UR05: Mortality, Health and Epidemiology (Mortalité, santé, épidémiologie) at the Institut National d'Etudes Démographiques in Paris (France).
From 2007 to September 2012, I have been research scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock (Germany).
I received my first university education at the Università “La Sapienza” in Rome on Social and Demographic Statistical Sciences. Later I continued my study at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research within the Laboratory of Statistical Demography. I earned my Ph.D. in “Mathematical Engineering: Statistical Sciences and Techniques Area” at the Department of Statistics at Universidad Carlos III in Madrid with a dissertation on “Smoothing Methods for the Analysis of Mortality Development”.
My interests range from mortality forecasts to modeling patterns of digit preference, warping models for lifetime distributions, modelling and smoothing mortality surfaces, reconstruction of mortality series by causes of death and analysis of social contact data. I also have numerous collaborations in European research institutions and I have been involved in various teaching activities. In the past years, I have written some research papers in the field of demography and statistics and I have devised an R package for smoothing and forecasting mortality.

In 2020, I received an immense honor by Population Europe which decides to assign me the prestigious “2021 European Demographer Award” (category "more experienced researcher").
This prize "supports outstanding research on the causes and consequences of demographic change in Europe". With José Manuel Aburto (selected in the category upcoming researcher), we were selected as "exemplary for the international cooperation in top-level European research".
With great pleasure I report here the arguments behind the evaluation committee decision: “He is one of the most important population statisticians of his generation and has been particularly involved in methodological issues and forecasting of mortality at old age. His aim is to process complex processes using statistics in such a way that they can be better used to describe long-term trends and for forecasting. He also teaches at the two top universities in France, ENSAE and ENSAI, and at the European Doctoral School of Demography.”

In 2018 I was honored to receive the Trailblazer Award for Demographic Analysis by the European Association for Population Studies, which "honors outstanding achievements by an individual scholar in the development and application of the methods of demographic analysis, including mathematical and bio-demography".
